The Hayling Islander first appeared in June 1973. The original eight-page newspaper, printed in a garage in Fishery Lane, grew to become a busy 32-page tabloid, eagerly awaited every month by its loyal readers all over the island.
The paper was taken over by the News Group, Portsmouth, in 1989 and had reached 48 pages at the end of 2000. The Hayling Islander ran until July 2019, when the decision was taken to close it down.
Its founder, Robert Godfrey, sadly died in 1994 at the age of just 62. He would have been proud to know that the Islander continued to thrive into the 21st Century.
