In the summer of 1958 Robert Godfrey, from Ockham in Surrey, spent a fortnight with his new wife Barbara on the beautiful Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. Robert was a keen and talented photographer and had recently won a commendation for a short drama film he directed entitled Take Fright. While on Barra, where Whisky Galore! was made just nine years earlier, Robert used his Standard 8mm cine camera to capture local scenes. His film runs to about 22 minutes, and clips from it have been used twice on British television, including in a 2006 documentary entitled The Boy Who Lived Before. Robert’s original film has been preserved for the Scottish Screen Archive by the National Library of Scotland. Below you’ll see a selection of frames from his footage. The film is available as a DVD entitled Barra – Isle in the West for just £8.50, including UK p&p. NOTE: this price is for shipping to UK addresses only.
